Multipurpose LED Display KIT

Multipurpose LED Display Kit is designed as elegant and simple addition to microcontroller projects. In comparison with conventional LCD displays which have already over flooded the global market it has significantly bigger symbols brightly glowing in dark areas and distinctly visible from a distance of a few meters. At the same time, unlike 7-segment LED displays, this solution is capable of displaying not only digits but chain of characters. What it remarkable, the message length is not limited by the display width due to scrolling effect which is implemented in software. All these features will give your project new, unusual look and may make wider its application range.

The display is fully supported by DefendLine project but could find its application in any AVR/PIC based project;

Features:

  • Six LED matrixes 5×7 dots, 36×7 dots in total driven by 9 signal lines (7×2 header includes GND and +5V power lines as well);
  • Compact form factor, the assembly is split into two PCBs allowing to have vertical dimension virtually as low as the height of a LED matrix;
  • LED panel itself comprises of LED matrixes and a connector only allowing to have interchangeable panels of different LED colors;
  • Included sample AVR Assemlber source code contains definitions of first standard 127 symbols of ASCII table, subroutines for display refreshing, clearing, printing out a character/line, access on pixel level, smooth horizontal message scrolling. C-based sample code will be released soon as well;
  • Easy to assemble, excellent kit for self education;
  • Could be used in any AVR/PIC-based project for displaying alphabetical information or simple graphics and has a potential to give stylish and unusual look to your device;

It includes:

  • 1 x fully assembled and tested PCB;
  • 1 x 14-pin header connector;
  • 1 x 14-wire 15mm long flat cable;

PCBs for Display Module have arrived

New PCBs for multipurpose dot matrix display module have been delivered. Each module comprises of two PCBs joined together by a connector and allowing to minimise vertical dimension virtually to a LED matrix height and giving flexibility to change display color simply by replacing the LED panel.

This time a different PCB manufacturer has been chosen, the order was placed with PCBCart company instead of Futurlec so now there is an opportunity to compare them. Both companies are located in China but PCBCart has fairly lower prices. It also has higher technological capabilities offering smaller minimal drilling sizes, narrower minimal traces widths and minimal clearances. Specialists in PCBCart work definitely faster without need of reminding about your order and asking about its fate. On the other hand, Futurlec offers cheaper delivery and very, very simplified PCB order quotation (the latter could be considered as advantageous or not depending on your qualification and/or PCB requirements). And finally, the visual quality of silk layer if slightly better in Futurlec (font quality is kind of same but long straight lines drawn by PCBCart are not that straight due to hardly noticed by naked eye variable width).

DefendLine Kit

DefendLine Kit is a fully assembled and ready to use PCB, it is an excellent solution for anyone from beginners to experienced hobbists, the device can be considered as an inexpensive GSM alarm with potential of sending pictures of a guarded site (the latter option is available for certain mobile phones only). The board works in tandem with a mobile phone or a GSM modem. Apart from GSM guarding function this kit might be used for automation of many different tasks or to serve as a module for more complex systems. For more information please refer to the project’s description: DefendLine project

PLEASE NOTE: The firmware contains user specific settings such as master phone number(s) for sending alerts to and for controlling the device remotely, sensor descriptions, mobile phone commands to interact with its embedded camera etc so you will need an AVR ISP programmer (for instance, USBTinyISP) in order to flash your device. Alternatively, you can provide us with your setting and we can flash it before shipment. In any case the controller is flashed with default settings and tested to make sure it works.

Features:

  • Includes Atmel ATmega32 chip with 32k internal flash program memory clocked by 3.6864 MHz crystal;
  • Power supply: 5 Vdc;
  • Four independent input lines for alarm sensors (PIR sensors, etc);
  • Two output lines to relay board;
  • Serial interface for communication with mobile phone/GSM modem/RS232 converter;
  • RTC (32768 kHz) crystal;
  • Standard AVR ISP 10-pin connector for in-circuit flashing;
  • Extension connector with 10 I/O lines;
  • Backup power supply and software driven main power failure detection;
  • Two buttons for toggling modes;
  • Two LEDs (red and green) to indicate states;
  • Open source firmware unlocks literally unlimited potential of this kit;

It includes:

  • 1 x fully assembled and tested PCB;
  • 1 x power jack;
  • 1 x modem connector;
  • 1 x alarm sensors connector;
  • 1 x CD with firmware source code and documentation;

Magictale AVR projects blog is opened!

Welcome everyone to the newly created Magictale Electronics blog! As you probably already guessed, it is dedicated to exploration of vast, entertaining and everchanging world of modern electronics and particularly those devices based on microprocessors. The projects published here are thought to be implemented in a way allowing to simplify the understanding of their principles, take advantage of non-standard approachs and original ideas yet keeping hardware and software complexity below the limits of home laboratories and electronics enthusiasts without scientific degree. This blog is supposed to be useful not only for hobbyists but for professionals as well. Please feel free to comment, ask questions and suggest ideas. Good luck!
